IEC 61098:2003 pertains to contamination warning assemblies, meters, and monitors designed for detecting radioactive contamination on the surfaces of individuals, whether they are clothed or not. It specifically applies to equipment that requires no action from the user other than presenting themselves and/or their hands and feet to the detectors. This standard does not cover equipment that involves the user or another person moving detectors over the monitored area or equipment where the user quickly passes through a monitoring system. Additionally, it excludes any peripheral devices that may be associated with specific types of equipment, such as small article monitors.
The standard is relevant for monitoring the entire body (including the face), as well as hands and feet, although certain sections can be applied to equipment specifically designed for monitoring radioactive contamination on the hands and/or feet alone.
This standard applies to:
- Installed personnel monitoring equipment (all clauses are applicable);
- Equipment for monitoring hands (refer to the following clauses and subclauses: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.1.2, 7.2, 7.3.2, 7.4.1.2 b), 7.4.2, 7.4.3.1, 7.4.3.2, 7.4.3.3 b), 7.5, 7.6, 7.7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12);
- Equipment for monitoring feet (refer to the following clauses and subclauses: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.1.3, 7.2, 7.3.3, 7.4.1.2 c), 7.4.2, 7.4.3.1, 7.4.3.2, 7.4.3.3 c), 7.5, 7.6, 7.7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13);
- Equipment for monitoring both hands and feet (refer to the following clauses and subclauses: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.1.2, 7.1.3, 7.2, 7.3.2, 7.3.3, 7.4.1.2 b), 7.4.1.2 c), 7.4.2, 7.4.3.1, 7.4.3.2, 7.4.3.3 b), 7.4.3.3 c), 7.5, 7.6, 7.7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12).
The aim of this International Standard is to establish the mechanical and operational characteristics, minimum performance criteria, and general testing procedures for personnel monitoring equipment.
