IEC 60923:2006 defines the performance requirements for ballasts used with discharge lamps, including high-pressure mercury vapor, low-pressure sodium vapor, high-pressure sodium vapor, and metal halide lamps. Clauses 12 to 15 provide specific requirements for different types of ballasts. The standard applies to inductive-type ballasts designed for use with a.c. supplies up to 1,000 V at 50 Hz to 60 Hz, and associated with discharge lamps having rated wattage, dimensions, and characteristics as outlined in the relevant IEC lamp standards.
NOTE 1: Some types of discharge lamps require an ignitor.
NOTE 2: The extension of the standard to include ballasts that incorporate or are used with series capacitors is under consideration.
NOTE 3: The performance requirements for ballasts used with tubular fluorescent lamps are covered in IEC 60921.
NOTE 4: Regional standards govern the regulation of mains current harmonics for end-products like luminaires and independent control gear. In luminaires, the control gear is the primary contributor in this regard. Control gear, along with other components, should comply with these regional standards.
