The present International Standard outlines the primary features of supply traction systems, encompassing traction fixed installations, auxiliary devices, contact lines, and rolling stock, for use in the following contexts:
- Underground and elevated railways;
- Guided mass transit systems, such as tramways, mountain railways, and trolleybus systems;
- Material handling systems.
This standard does not cover:
- Traction systems in underground mines;
- Cranes, transportable platforms, and comparable rail-mounted transportation equipment, as well as temporary structures (e.g., exhibition structures) that are not powered directly from, or via transformers, the contact line system, and are not at risk from the traction power supply system;
- Suspended cable cars;
- Funicular railways.
The standard addresses long-term overvoltages, as detailed in Annex A.
