This section of IEC 60034 outlines the IM Code, which is a classification system for the construction types, mounting configurations, and terminal box placement of rotating electrical machines. The standard presents two classification systems as follows:
- Code I (refer to Section 2): This is an alphanumeric designation intended for machines equipped with end-shield bearings and a single shaft extension.
- Code II (refer to Section 3): This is an all-numeric designation that encompasses a broader spectrum of machine types, including those that fall under Code I.
For machine types not included within Code II, a full written description should be provided. The relationship between Code I and Code II is detailed in Annex A.
