This portion of IEC 61243 is designed for portable voltage detectors, either with or without an integrated power source, intended for use on electrical systems with voltages ranging from 1 kV to 36 kV a.c. and frequencies between 15 Hz and 60 Hz.
The standard is limited to resistive voltage detectors that are used in direct contact with the component under test, either as a standalone unit or as a separate device complemented by an insulating pole that complies with IEC 60855 or IEC 61235. This part of the standard does not encompass other types of voltage detectors. Capacitive voltage detectors are addressed in IEC 61243-1.
The upper voltage limit is determined by the tests detailed in this section of IEC 61243. There are certain limitations on their use when it comes to factory-assembled switchgear and overhead systems of electrified railways (refer to Annex B).
NOTE 1: Unless otherwise stated, all voltages referenced in this standard are phase-to-phase voltages in three-phase systems. Resistive detectors can be employed in systems other than three-phase, but the relevant phase-to-phase or phase-to-earth (ground) voltage must be used to establish the operating voltage.
NOTE 2: While this standard does not include specifications for DC voltage detectors, certain detectors may be responsive to DC voltage.
